<p> DIED. MARV JOHNSON, 54, soul vocalist; after a stroke; in Columbia,
South Carolina. If recording impresario Berry Gordy was the
brains of the Motown sound, Johnson was its original soul. His
1959 hit, Come to Me, was the earliest example of what would
become the universally recognized, best-selling Motown sound:
gospel backgrounds fused with rhythm-and-blues and a white-friendly
theme. Subsequent Gordy-Johnson collaborations included Top
10 hits You Got What It Takes and I Love the Way You Love.
